In 2007 I saw this lovely bloke win the New Inventors Award on the ABC and emailed him my congratulations “from one conehead to another”.
So it’s 2015 now and unless you’ve been living under a rock (hell, even if you HAVE been living under a rock!) you’re probably aware there is such a beast called a blog. You know, a journal-style series of web pages that … wait a second … THIS IS A BLOG! And you knew that. Kudos.
You’re also probably (somewhat painfully) aware that people “blog” as a way of marketing their business.
But not you.
You’re busy, you’re not really a writer, you’ve got nothing to say, and hell, you’re not even sure how, technically speaking, to do it. So of course you don’t blog!
And what kind of a verb is “blog” anyway? Surely, if it’s even a verb at all, it should, by the sound of it, describe the performance of some unmentionable body function?
But yay, verily I say unto thee – put aside your natural cantankerousness for a moment and consider these wise words from the wilderness (AKA The Dandenong Ranges). [Read more…]
I have 3 books about the “80/20 Principle” and how to use it in my life and business.
What’s not to like about the idea of achieving more done by doing less? Especially when, being a parent, business owner, musician and human being (in that precise order), I always have way more to do than I can actually do.
The funny thing is that I have never actually managed to find the fabled sweet-spot of the 80/20 rule.
Not yet anyway … but dammit – one day! [Read more…]
Marketing is really about mirroring people’s beliefs (or what they WANT to believe). It’s not so much about changing beliefs. Not if you want to succeed at it anyway.
When we notice marketing messages (be they verbal, written, visual, whatever) that “resonate” with us and make us pay attention, it’s because they are repeating back to us what we already believe. [Read more…]
My friend Troy Dean reminded me today (in one of his excellent WordPress training videos) of something I wrote 3 nights ago that I’d like share here. It’s about the “why” behind the “what” and “how” of the work we do here for our clients.
The Big Why
As in “why are we in business?”
To make the world a happier, more compassionate place.
To me, the purpose of doing business is not just to change the world, but to save the world. [Read more…]
The other day I went in to a bank. The woman at the counter looked so unimpressed that I interrupted her that she could barely bring herself to say hello.
Same happened when I was served by a food truck recently. I waited at the counter for maybe 10 minutes (felt like 5 years) before the unsmiling dude eventually stopped ignoring me and reluctantly took my order.
I was happy to wait, but what I was not happy about was how I was left hanging, my presence unacknowledged. [Read more…]
There are many strategies and tactics to marketing, but actually, all of this is unimportant compared to the greatest marketing secret of all.
*Cough* excuse me, I mean: The Greatest Marketing Secret Of All.
(Definitely deserving of a little hyperbole!)
Once you understand and employ the secret, winning new and repeat business becomes so much simpler.
I will reveal this (not so) secret in a moment but first, tell me…
What Business Are You In?
Maybe you sell sandwiches. Or personal training. Or perhaps you are a photographer. So the answer to my question is obvious: you’re in the lunch business, the fitness industry, the glamour biz, right?
Well, yes … but no.
Actually the sandwich guy and the personal trainer and the photographer (and the rest of us) are all in the same business. [Read more…]
Well we’re certainly busy here in SquareEyes land with multiple projects on the go all at once.
Here’s one website design example that’s just been finished and is now live, a corporate company that I have with several times in the past wanted a new consolidated website to accompany their company name change and new management structure. They felt it was time for a fresh new web presence, including mobile-friendly responsive design. We also designed their logo. [Read more…]
“The sheer volume of digital marketing options and all the noise and how to know what to focus on and OMG I don’t have the time or the headspace for all this but I know I can’t ignore it!”
This is the story I hear from my clients when they come to me. And this is problem I help them solve.
In doing so I have discovered a few little secrets along the way. Actually, they’re not really secrets, it’s just that while you’re busy running your business, you don’t have time to learn the arcane mysteries of web marketing!
Some of them are so fundamental that you really should know about them, so here’s 3 “marketing secrets” that can really change the game for you: [Read more…]
