How I Increased New Email Campaign Subscribers 675% with One Simple Tweak

No really, I did.

A corporate client had a website with a sign-up form in the right hand sidebar and it was pulling in about 8 new email subscribers a week. I pulled one swift, sexy and downright AMAZING marketing ninja move and in one week we pulled in 54 emails.

Let me just quietly yell this at you: THAT’S 675% MORE EMAIL CAMPAIGN SUBSCRIPTIONS MAN!

Oh … wait … actually that’s 575% … BUT STILL – THAT’S HUGE RIGHT?!

“Yeah, OK, OK, but how?” I hear you impatiently demand, “How? Just tell me how!”

Patience … I need to fill my page-length quota for SEO purposes here. I am not going to get much traction on the SERPs if I just go and tell you in one freakin’ line am I? Huh? AM I???

So, before we do get to the meat of this article (to the “big reveal”, the one that will make you go “Wow!”), let’s look at a few popular, different ways to increase email campaign subscriptions.

Email Campaign – List Building Tactics

#1 -Blog Footer Call To Action

A popular way to increase subscriptions is to put a call to action at the bottom of every blog post. I have no data on how well that works, but I am going to try it down the track for sure. I doubt it totally sucks, at the least.

#2 -Old Fashioned Pen & Paper

AKA real world acquisition of email addresses.

Bands have been trying this at gigs for years and for the most part it sucks. I mean when was the last time you went up and added your email to one of those lists at a gig? (Come to think of it, when was the last you went to a gig at all? You really should get out more.)

Well this spectacular failure rate happens because most bands, when they so diligently put out the email campaign sign-up sheet at the door, forget the most important thing.

“What is the MOST IMPORTANT THING?” I hear you holler?

Well, it is this: people only care about what’s in it for them. And they are not short of emails. Bear this in mind as you scan through the rest of the list like a two-year old who, while brilliant, has ADD and has been drinking tequila since before noon.

#3 – Sidebar sign-up forms.

Yes, they work, especially if you make them big and easy to see. But not as good as my revolutionary email campaign tweak. No where near it baby….

#4 – Give some thing away for free

See point #2? See what was missing there?

Correct!

They weren’t making the prospect an offer! Emails have value; you want them, they don’t really want to give them out – so you need to offer them some kind of value exchange.

I’ve been giving away free ebooks on one of my other wacky websites for years and now I have an email list that is WAY too big and expensive to actually email very often. People just love getting the free stuff.

Ok ok, fine …

So the thing I did … you’re not going to like.

In fact, I felt a little dirty myself. I had to take a shower afterwards … but do I regret it? Hell no! Why? Because it worked, dammit!

To increase email campaign subscriptions by 575% … what I did was…

… I installed a pop-up.

I know.

And I’m sorry.

But it just works.

In this instance I didn’t even have anything to give away for free, just the promise of a newsletter (like anyone needs one of them) and it STILL worked.

Pop-ups,  they suck… but they totally work…
