SEO – The Basics (And How To Avoid Getting Bitten By The Sharks)

August 18, 2014 by Seamus Anthony Leave a Comment

Here’s 10 years of SEO work condensed into a really short blog post:

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is about getting higher SERP (search engine result pages) rankings AKA get found on Google for relevant keywords that people are using to find businesses who offer what you sell.

There are two sides to SEO – onsite and offsite.

SEO Shark!

Beware the SEO Shark!

Panda 4? No Problems

May 26, 2014 by Seamus Anthony Leave a Comment

In case you aren’t a total nerd with no life, Panda 4.0 is a new update by Google which means they change stuff and some websites fair badly in the Google results and others fair well.

Good news is my sites have done really well, which confirms my belief that I have been doing SEO the “good guy” way (or “white hat” as it is known, by nerds). [Read more…]

SEO Case Study: 1st Page of Google FTW!

May 19, 2014 by Seamus Anthony Leave a Comment

Early in 2014 Nicolas Di Tempora of Copywriting In Action, came to me, referred from a mutual friend (thanks Hilda!). Nicolas wanted to know what could be done to improve his rankings on Google for his most important search terms which were “Copywriting courses” and “copywriting course Melbourne”.

first page of google

OK this is probably the worst blog image ever but hey, I AM IN DEMAND THUS VERY BUSY. Anyway it proves I got him on the first page of Google, so whatever.

At the time, he was languishing on the 3rd page. Anything off the first page is next to useless. We did some SEO magic that got him on the first page FTW!

Nicolas didn’t really know me from Adam but he took a chance and hired me to do an SEO audit of his website, make recommendations going forward and do a SEO Foundations set-up on his website. [Read more…]

How To Rank In Google Instantly

March 25, 2014 by Seamus Anthony

Oh God – that sounds EXACTLY like the kind of snake-oil salesman headline we should all run away from, doesn’t it? But actually this is a pretty straight up technique that works if the keyword (or phrase) you want to get found for in Google is not super-competitive. I just did it twenty minutes ago and thought I would share it with the world … cos I am such a nice guy.

That’s me there, looking all moody and sexy about my awesome Google rankings

SEO Keyword Data is Becoming Harder to Gather

October 3, 2013 by Seamus Anthony Leave a Comment

Google are moving the SEO goal posts big time in making keyword data much more difficult to track. They are doing this by:

  • moving toward not reporting keyword data in analytics (i.e. what keyword was used in search to get to your site)
  • making the new keyword planner that replaces the old keyword tool less useful (no related keyword suggestions, restricted search volume information types)

Local SEO Results

October 3, 2013 by Seamus Anthony 2 Comments

So the other day I ran a test to see how easy it can be to get some local SEO results by testing how hard it would be to rank up high in Google for Dandenong Ranges Website Design. My guess was that with a bit of SEO know-how it wouldn’t be all that hard. [Read more…]

Local SEO Experiment

September 29, 2013 by Seamus Anthony

Sometimes the first key to SEO success is simply to find the low-hanging fruit and pluck it. For example, I have run my business since 2008 selling websites, copywriting and SEO without ever really using these tactics to win business. Why? Not because I didn’t think I could, but simply because I have always been so good at winning referrals through word of mouth that it wasn’t an issue, especially given that, being a freelancer, scale is. The One Small Business SEO Tip That Beats Them All

September 27, 2013 by Seamus Anthony Leave a Comment

I manage medium and small business SEO campaigns, so I often get people – clever, busy people running their own businesses who don’t have time to read one million SEO articles or spend umpteen hours testing their latest SEO idea – ask me “how can I get to number one in Google?” [Read more…]

Google Keyword Tool Dies, Makes Keyword Research Harder

September 25, 2013 by Seamus Anthony Leave a Comment

So yeah it appears that Google have ruined a good thing by killing off their Google Keyword Tool. So for anyone working on their SEO, this makes the vital business of keyword research a lot harder for the moment anyway, until the best replacement is discovered.

http://searchengineland.com/google-keyword-tool-is-officially-dead-replaced-by-keyword-planner-170745

“Unlike the Keyword Tool, used by SEOs and PPC managers alike, users must login to an AdWords account to access the Planner. That’s just one of the grumbles heard around the Internet about the Keyword Planner. The Planner has no match type data for search volume (search volumes are displayed for exact match only), no device targeting, no local vs. global monthly searches, and the option to filter by “closely related” search terms is gone.

On that last point, however, Barry Schwartz noticed that Courtney Pannell of Google said the Keyword Planner team will be bringing the “closely related” feature back in the upcoming weeks.”

….the last point is good though because that is the feature we need. So maybe there is hope, Obi Wan Kenobi…
